HH the 14th Dalai Lama (b. 1935) is Tibet's spiritual leader. He was born in Taktser, Amdo, in eastern Tibet, in the family of a Buddhist monk. He received an excellent education and began his monastic training at the age of six in Tholing Monastery from where he graduated from Sera Monastery in Lhasa aged seventeen
In 1950, he fled to India to escape the Chinese occupation of his country. In exile, he founded the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India. After fleeing from Tibet in 1959, the present Dalai Lama was placed under house arrest by Communist China for over twenty years.
He formally escaped from Tibet on July 20, 1989 and has been living in Dharamsala ever since.
